This cuisine originated in the Chinese immigrant community in Kolkata, India, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As Chinese immigrants settled in India, they adapted their traditional recipes to suit Indian tastes and available ingredients, leading to the creation of Indo-Chinese cuisine.

Origins and Background

Cultural Fusion: Indo-Chinese cuisine developed as a result of the fusion between Chinese culinary techniques and Indian spices and flavors. It incorporates Chinese methods of cooking, such as stir-frying, with Indian ingredients like paneer, a type of fresh cheese commonly used in Indian cooking.

Kolkata’s Chinatown: The earliest roots of Indo-Chinese cuisine can be traced back to Kolkata’s Chinatown, where the Hakka Chinese community adapted their recipes to cater to Indian palates. Over time, this style of cooking spread across India and became immensely popular.
