The Blue Lagoon Drink is a classic cocktail known for its vibrant blue color and refreshing taste. It’s a popular choice for those who enjoy a visually striking and flavorful beverage. Here’s some information about its creation and origin:
Origin and History:
- Creation: The Blue Lagoon cocktail was created in the 1970s by a bartender named Andy MacElhone at the famous Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. The drink quickly gained popularity due to its eye-catching blue color and unique flavor profile.
- Name: The name “Blue Lagoon” is inspired by the drink’s striking blue hue, reminiscent of tropical lagoons and crystal-clear waters.
Ingredients:
- Blue Curaçao: This blue liqueur is the key ingredient that gives the Blue Lagoon its distinctive color. It is made from the dried peel of the laraha orange, native to the island of Curaçao, and has a sweet, slightly bitter orange flavor.
- Vodka: A common base spirit used in the cocktail, vodka provides the drink with its alcoholic kick without overpowering the other flavors.
- Lemonade: Adds a refreshing and slightly tart flavor that balances the sweetness of the blue curaçao.
Preparation:
- Mixing: The drink is typically prepared by combining vodka, blue curaçao, and lemonade in a shaker with ice. It is then poured into a glass over ice.
- Garnish: The cocktail is often garnished with a slice of lemon or a cherry, and sometimes a cocktail umbrella for a touch of tropical flair.
Mocktail Variation:
- For a non-alcoholic version, the Blue Lagoon can be adapted by omitting the vodka and using a non-alcoholic blue syrup or a similar substitute. This version is perfect for those who prefer a refreshing, fizzy drink without the alcohol.
The Blue Lagoon Drink remains a favorite for its vibrant color, refreshing taste, and its ability to transport you to a tropical paradise with every sip.
