The chicken roll, particularly popular in its various forms across different cultures, is a culinary creation that blends elements of convenience, flavor, and portability. While its exact origins are somewhat debated and varied depending on the region, here’s a general overview of its evolution and cultural associations.
Origins and Evolution:
India: In India, particularly Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), the chicken roll is believed to have originated as a street food. It combines influences from Mughlai cuisine, where marinated meats cooked in tandoor (clay ovens) were popular, and British culinary traditions during the colonial era.
- The concept of wrapping spiced meats in flatbreads or parathas (Indian flatbreads) likely contributed to the evolution of the chicken roll as a portable and flavorful snack.
Middle East: In Middle Eastern cuisine, shawarma, a similar concept to the chicken roll, involves skewered and grilled meats (typically lamb or chicken) that are shaved and served in a wrap or pita bread.
The techniques and flavors associated with shawarma have influenced variations of chicken rolls found in other parts of the world.
Ingredients and Preparation:
Chicken rolls typically involve marinating chicken pieces in a blend of spices, often including garlic, ginger, chili, and various herbs.
The meat is then grilled, roasted, or sautéed until tender and flavorful.
The chicken is often wrapped in a flatbread or paratha along with fresh vegetables like onions, lettuce, and sometimes sauces or chutneys for added flavor.
Global Popularity:Chicken rolls have gained popularity globally as a convenient and satisfying snack or meal option. Variations can be found in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Middle East, and parts of Southeast Asia, each with its own regional twist on the ingredients and preparation methods. In some places, the term “chicken roll” may refer to a specific preparation method or a broader category of rolled or wrapped chicken dishes.
Adaptations and Modern Trends:
1.Modern interpretations of the chicken roll often cater to diverse tastes and dietary preferences, offering options such as grilled chicken rolls, tandoori chicken rolls, or even vegetarian versions with paneer (Indian cottage cheese) or falafel.
These rolls have become popular in restaurants, street food stalls, and home kitchens alike, reflecting their versatility and appeal across different cultures and culinary traditions.
In essence, the chicken roll represents a fusion of flavors and techniques that have evolved over time, adapting to local tastes and ingredients while maintaining its core appeal as a convenient and delicious snack or meal option.
The evolution of chicken rolls to be served in thin spring roll sheets has brought about a delightful twist to this beloved dish. Unlike traditional rolls that are typically wrapped in thicker parathas or flatbreads, these spring roll sheet versions offer instant gratification with a crispier texture. This makes them perfect for various occasions, whether it’s enjoying them during Iftaars in Ramadan, as part of a high tea spread, or any festive gathering.
The thin spring roll sheets not only enhance the crunchiness of the rolls but also make them lighter and easier to handle. They provide a delightful contrast to the juicy and flavorful chicken filling inside, creating a memorable eating experience. Moreover, their quick preparation time makes them ideal for serving guests without compromising on taste or quality.
This modern adaptation of using spring roll sheets showcases the versatility of chicken rolls, catering to different preferences and occasions. Whether you’re looking for a savory snack or a crowd-pleasing appetizer, these crispy chicken rolls in spring roll sheets are sure to add a touch of richness and enjoyment to any meal or celebration.

- To prepare these delicious Tandoori Chicken rolls, start by marinating chicken cubes in a bowl with ginger-garlic paste, lemon juice, and a blend of powdered spices. Let the chicken marinate for about 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pan and sauté the marinated chicken for 5 minutes until it starts to cook through. Next, add red chili sauce, Schezwan sauce (or chutney), soy sauce, vinegar, and black salt to the chicken. Mix everything thoroughly. Incorporate finely chopped cabbage, onion, and capsicum into the mixture and stir-fry on high heat for 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium, cover the pan, and cook until the chicken is tender, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking. Once the chicken is fully cooked, add freshly chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
- For an added smoky flavor, heat a piece of charcoal until it’s red-hot. Place the hot charcoal in a small bowl within the pan containing the chicken mixture. Drizzle a bit of butter or oil over the charcoal and immediately cover the pan with a lid. Allow the smoke to infuse into the chicken mixture for about 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the charcoal carefully and thoroughly mix the smoky flavors into the chicken.
- Now, take each spring roll sheet and place a portion of the prepared chicken mixture in the center. Brush the edges of the sheet with a mixture of wheat flour and water (used as glue) to seal the roll. Roll the sheet tightly around the filling, ensuring the ends are securely sealed with the glue mixture. Repeat this process until all the rolls are assembled.
- Heat oil in a deep vessel or kadhai over medium heat(don’t over heat the oil as it will create bubbles on the sheets of chicken roll which will not appear good). Carefully place the prepared chicken rolls into the hot oil and fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy. Remove the rolls from the oil and drain excess oil on paper towels.
